Tour description

Step into the world of emperors, gladiators and conspirators on our Colosseum and Ancient Rome Free Walking Tour, exploring the places where some of the most famous moments in Roman history actually happened.

We begin at Largo di Torre Argentina, where Julius Caesar was assassinated in 44 BC, before discovering the remains of an ancient Roman apartment block and what everyday life was really like nearly 2,000 years ago.

From there, we climb the Capitoline Hill to Michelangelo’s spectacular Piazza del Campidoglio and the famous statue of Marcus Aurelius. Just around the corner, one of the best panoramic views in Rome opens beneath us: the Roman Forum, once the beating heart of an empire that ruled much of the known world.

As we continue through Ancient Rome, discover stories of ambition, betrayal, emperors and ordinary citizens, and see how the city transformed from a small settlement on the Tiber into the capital of a vast empire.

Our journey ends by the Colosseum, Rome’s most iconic ancient monument. Here, we uncover the real story of the gladiators, the spectacles that entertained tens of thousands of Romans, and the extraordinary society that built the greatest amphitheatre of the ancient world.

By the time we reach the Colosseum, Ancient Rome will no longer feel like a collection of ruins, but a city of emperors, gladiators, ambition and betrayal brought back to life.
